Acid Reflux Foods to Avoid

acid reflux foods to avoid
Just like the home remedies for heartburn, acid reflux or GERD, there are lots of foods, “trigger” foods, that people have indicated bring on symptoms, but sensitivities seem to vary greatly between sufferers. What really irritates me (in addition to some of the foods mentioned, I think), is the apparent authority that many websites and sources adopt – they trot out a list of acid reflux foods to avoid without any backup evidence or reference to how the list has been arrived at. So far, I’ve not been able to find any studies, or hard and fast evidence, that demonstrate specific foods bring on heartburn or acid reflux, with the possible exception of high carbohydrate foods (see here). The usual list of acid reflux foods to avoid include:
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Spicy foods
  • Fatty foods
  • Citrus fruits

In my own case, I have been trying to follow the paleo diet for the last 6 weeks (for the best resource on this have a look at Mark’s Daily Apple here ) which has meant eliminating many high carb foods, such as grains and potatoes, as well as many of the foods on the list above. Results so far have been mixed, and I can say that I have not encountered an epiphany moment when the acid reflux has stopped for a consistently long time; I have, however, had moments when it has disappeared for a while, and times it has come back with a vengeance. The latter have been difficult to analyse, but I suspect the bad periods have been associated with drinking alcohol and coffee. read more
